Old Mill of Guilford (Oak Ridge, NC)

Via Flickr:
In 1767 Daniel Dillon built a small tub mill on Bever Creek and went into business grinding grain for early settlers. The origional tub mill and dwelling was sold to Joel Sanders for $900 in 1908. In 1913 the mill was purchased by K L Hendrix who later converted the mill to a roller mill and replaced the wheel with a turbine. In 1932 state highway 68 was built between the dam and mill. To keep the mill in operation the long overhead wooden flume was replaced by a 26" steel pipe under the new road. Charles Bailes purchased the mill in 1954. Bailes removed the roller mill machinery and replaced the turbine with a 24' x 2' Fitz overshot water wheel which still operates today. In 1977 the mill was sold to the current owners who continue to operate the mill on a full-time basis today.

Don't You Rock My Boat! [Explored]

Location: Pathio, Chumphon Thailand

The beach is located on the East side (Gulf of Thailand) of the skinniest part of Southern Thailand. Andaman Sea is on the West side. The Gulf color tends to be aqua or green due to algae and nutrients while the Andaman Sea is more blue.

Chumphon is a Thai Province not overly developed and bombarded with tourism yet. Since it's on the Gulf side, it's protected from Tsunami. The Gulf is also popular among scuba divers (like myself) and best visited in Summer and Fall. Andaman Sea is a more favorable choice among divers in Winter and Spring to avoid monsoon in the Gulf.

Side note: The locals consider their country a two-system climate: hot and f-ing hot, so I was told. In all seriousness, their cool season (our Winter) is just perfect.

Please take your time... to View it large on black

From Passau - Germany we drove to Austria. Do you wonder why it's always so green in Austria? Cause it rains now and than, not always good weather in these region of the Alps. We arrived at the Traunsee. Lake Traun is the deepest of the lakes in the Salzkammergut at 191 meters. In summertime the area is the perfect location for a lakes and mountains holiday. But no swimming today, so we visited Schloss Ort, a tiny castle on a miniature island in the Traunsee. Cross the bridge onto the island and wander around the picturesque castle whose courtyard is surrounded by arcaded balconies. One side of the courtyard leads to a pretty little chapel. Lake Castle Orth The palace is named after the Ort family -- powerful people in this region in the 11th and 12th centuries. When their power waned, the kingdom began changing hands frequently. More often than not, it was bought or sold, but occasionally gained new owners through death or marriage. Today, young couple flock to the island for wedding ceremonies, but are probably unaware of the most famous marriage that happened here. In 1890, Archduke Johann Nepumuk Salvator married Milli Stubel, right after renouncing his position in the Habsburg empire and changing his name to Johann Orth -- after this castle.

Schloss Ort is a castle located on a little island at the Traunsee near Gmunden in Upper Austria. Gmunden offers a beautiful walk along the lake. The view to the lake and mountain behind it are absolutely breathaking.

Shooting fire with fast shutter speed reveals some amazing details we are not really used to seeing. The colours and shape of flames is simply amazing, fascinating and for me - magical. For me some parts of the flames resemble images by NASA depicting birth of galaxies.

Viewing in large on black is really recommended in this case as it simply looks much better :)

I also created a slideshow from all my shots from trip to Rome which you can see here.

Love At First Light (Light Painting), Kent

Via Flickr:
First attempt at light painting having invested £19 in a remote shutter release. I took five or six attempts to get the man worked out, using a basic flashlight/torch, dressed in navy and thoroughly hooded. This was my first attempt at the couple and the hearts. I'm delighted with it! Lots more long exposure work to come.

It was taken around 2:00am last night in Loose valley just above the village. The scene is lit across the grass with light from a bright moon, with fluorescent light from Maidstone on the horizon, which is tweaked only with the camera's WB. I cropped slightly in from the left as a third heart had strayed half off frame, and gave a minor boost to vibrancy and blacks. Lightroom 3 did a great job with noise reduction - a fair number of random (single) bright green/red/blue pixels from the long exposure were pruned without hassle.

Details: 229 seconds ¦ f/8.0 ¦ ISO 100.

Thanks for viewing! To see my second light painting of reindeer please see Light Harted.

Update: Explored #14 and front page! Many thanks to everyone who has commented, fav'ed and viewed. I massively appreciate the attention and insights offered, and will be working through everyone individually as soon as I have a chance. Thanks to all!

Chapelle de Lure

Chapelle de Lure by dubusregis
Chapelle de Lure, a photo by dubusregis on Flickr.

Via Flickr:

Falling in Love

Falling in Love, a photo by Ar'alani on Flickr.

Via Flickr:
This weekend, Jenna and I made a trip to Southern California to shoot a wedding. We had some time on Saturday to visit one of my favorite places in the whole world, La Jolla (just north of San Diego). What a night it was.

I even got to meet Aradan (Patrick), a splendid fellow who was one of my very first Flickr contacts. He's such an inspiration to me, and has always helped me see the world in a new and poetic way. Spending time with him was wonderful!

This is one of those places on my list for photography where I don't cut myself any slack. You must realize that I haven't been here since I had an SLR camera (last visit was with a point-and-shoot). Determined, I took on the fairly flat sky with a small internal battle cry. I wasn't walking away before I had something I could hang on my wall that summed up at least a bit of the fantastic memories I have of this place.

When I first visited San Diego, I was broke and barely out of college. My co-worker took me all over the town, showing me everything he loved. I loved it too. His second job at the time was as a valet at La Valencia, one of the oldest and most beautiful hotels in the area. He got me an $800/night room for a pittance, and I spent an evening I will never forget in a room with a balcony overlooking what's in this picture. The room had geranium pots, french doors and a beautiful bathtub, and I went downstairs to the parlor and talked to multi-millionaire horse barons for a couple of hours. I slept with the windows open, wakening in the morning to the sound of sea gulls. It was totally surreal. It changed the way I looked at the world.

This is the sincerest truth I have about photography: It allows me to re-live my life and all those precious moments in technicolor, as vivid as the day I stood there. I have regretted for years that I didn't have a picture from this spot. Now that I'm able to bring places back with me, checking these off is important. I want to hear the waves and feel the warm breeze on my cheek. Feel the lights of La Valencia sparkling next to me, welcoming me to a place I'd readily call home. Remember the night Nathan and I took a long walk along these shores, when we still weren't together but were head-over-heels in love, and the distance between Portland and San Francisco seemed insurmountable.

Shooting the wedding this weekend was a joy, and it falls into what I said above. These memories are sacred, whether mine or yours, his or hers... so precious. Ever more and more, I feel so lucky to be a photographer.
