The Lighthouse

I may not be very poetic. I might not be able to express in words the wonders of the lighthouse, but after all, that is the very point of this website! I will say this though. There is a stark image in my mind of the incredible purpose and high calling that is placed on a lighthouse and its operator.

We probably don't really have an appreciation for the necessity of these once prominent structures. Imagine though a time before all the navigation instruments that now come standard on our water-going vessels. Imagine the very real threat of destroying a boat, its cargo, and the tragic loss of lives if one were to pilot themselves too close to land.

There is truly something heroic about a lighthouse that thrusts itself past the edge of "safe" and dangerously close to ferocious churning waters for the sake of screaming out a warning to those that would otherwise surely destroy themselves on the very land they need to return to. A good friend of mine is a huge fan of lighthouses, so this post is for her! (GP)

Soccer - Futbol

From the bright lights and huge crowds of stadiums amped with action hungry fans to a small handful of close friends getting in the last few minutes before the sun goes down, soccer plays a big part in making life worth living!

I wish that I could tell you everything that is happening in the world of soccer but I honestly have been to busy to keep up with all the excitement. But, whether you are a season ticket holder, or have never seen a game in your life, take a break from the business of life and enjoi today's Top Ten Pictures of Soccer.

Wikipedia says:

Association football, commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players each. It is widely considered to be the most popular sport in the world.[1] A ball game, it is played on a rectangular grass field, or occasionally on artificial turf, with a goal at each end of the field. The object of the game is to score by manoeuvring the ball into the opposing goal; only the goalkeepers may use their hands or arms to propel the ball in general play; the rest of the team generally uses their feet to kick the ball into position, though occasionally they may use their torso or head to intercept a ball in mid air. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition.
The modern game was codified in
England following the formation of the Football Association, whose 1863 Laws of the Game created the foundations for the way the sport is played today. Football is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football), which is commonly known by the acronym FIFA. The most prestigious international football competition is the World Cup, held every four years. This event, the most widely viewed and famous in the world, boasts an audience twice that of the Summer Olympics.[2]

Liberty Enlightening the World

Happy Memorial Day everyone!

I know, I know - Statue of Liberty would be more appropriate on the Fourth of July. Regardless, Lady Liberty has been welcoming folk to the U.S. of A. for a long time and this seems as good an occasion as any to celebrate her!

Wikipedia says:

Liberty Enlightening the World (French: La liberté éclairant le monde), known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty (Statue de la Liberté), is a colossal statue given to the United States by France in 1886, standing at Liberty Island, New York in the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor as a welcome to all visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans. The copper-clad statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the United States and is a gesture of friendship between the two nations. The sculptor was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, engineered the internal structure. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the Repoussé technique.

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

...my first real six-string...

-Bryan Adams-

Who doesn't love the sound of a guitar? Whether it is the soothing, relaxing plucking of an acoustic or the mind-bending riff of an electric guitar... the sound is so sweet! Whether it is James Marshall Hendrix or Carlos Augusto Alves Santana (Jimi Hendrix and Santana) or a couple of buddies pickin and grinnin around a campfire the guitar is a world all of its own!

Wikipedia says:

The guitar is a musical instrument with ancient roots, used in a wide variety of musical styles, and it is also a solo classical instrument. It is recognized as one of the primary instruments in blues, country, flamenco, rock music and many forms of pop. The guitar usually has six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten, and twelve string guitars also exist. Guitars are made and repaired by luthiers. Guitars may be played acoustically or they may rely on an amplifier that usually allows for electronic manipulation of tone. The electric guitar was introduced in the 20th century and continues to have a profound influence on popular culture.

So put on a playlist of your favorite legendary riffs (or an acoustic number) and enjoi today's Top Ten Pictures of Guitars-

Summer of '69

I got my first real six-string
Bought it at the five-and-dime
Played it till my fingers bled
It was the summer of 69
Me and some guys from school
Had a band and we tried real hard
Jimmy quit and jody got married
I shoulda known wed never get far
Oh when I look back now
That summer seemed to last forever
And if I had the choice
Ya - Id always wanna be there
Those were the best days of my life
Aint no use in complainin
When you got a job to do
Spent my evenins down at the drive-in
And thats when I met you
Standin on your mamas porch
You told me that youd wait forever
Oh and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life
Back in the summer of 69
Man we were killin time
We were young and restless
We needed to unwind
I guess nothin can last forever - forever, no
And now the times are changin
Look at everything thats come and gone
Sometimes when I play that old six-string
I think about ya wonder what went wrong
Standin on your mamas porch
You told me it would last forever
Oh the way you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life
Back in the summer of 69

Don't Go Jumping Waterfalls

-Paul McCartney-

Sometimes a small trickle of water, sometimes an overwhelming, mind-blowing volume of rapidly rushing torrent. I guess all you need for a waterfall is falling water! But when we find these phenomena of nature we cannot help but stand in awe! From the incredible crushing power of Niagara falls to the little relaxation piece in your living room, the idea of water falling is a most wonderful thing.

Wikipedia says:

A waterfall is usually a geological formation resulting from water, often in the form of a stream, flowing over an erosion-resistant rock formation that forms a sudden break in elevation.
Some waterfalls form in
mountain environments where erosion is rapid and stream courses may be subject to sudden and catastrophic change. In such cases, the waterfall may not be the end product of many years of water action over a region, but rather the result of relatively sudden geological processes such as landslides, faults or volcanic action.
Waterfalls may also be artificial, and they are sometimes created as
garden and landscape ornaments.

Down the Tunnel I See Light

Nevermore will I have to fight...
-Insyderz-

They say that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. They say that you have tunnel vision. They say a lot of things. Tunnels are cool. They get us from point A. to point B. just a little quicker. Or, they create a way where there was no way. Typicaly speaking, tunnels aren't very exciting. More function than beauty. Nonetheless, these photogs have found beauty underground!

Wikipedia says:

A tunnel is an underground passage. The definition of what constitutes a tunnel is not universally agreed upon. However, in general tunnels are at least twice as long as they are wide. In addition, they should be completely enclosed on all sides, save for the openings at each end.

Enthos
The walls are closing in on me
I'm getting dizzy and it's hard to see
My lungs are heavy and it hurts to breath
Can't lift my head, stare at me feet
It's all getting clear
You tell me I don't want to hear
I know you see my eyes the fear
I clench my teeth and shut my ears
I've tried it all and I'm sick of fighting
The words of truth made clear in writing
Oh, Lord deliver me!
I want to be free so I may mount up on wings
For once I don't feel so dead
I can breath again and lift my head
No longer bound to a life once led
True to everything he said
I want to fly all around
And not look back or touch the ground
I want to fly up so high
And look deep into Your eyes
Gravity means nothing to me
Just another lock broke free
Against my face the wind will blow
To the world Your glory shows
I'm tired of Satan's attacks
Get the devil off my back
Down the tunnel I see light
Nevermore will I have to fight!
Pick it up (3X)
Hey (4X)
Oh, Lord deliver me
I want to be se free
I want to fly so high
Look deep into Your eyes (4X)
